Campaign continues on schedule

The 2008 Campaign continues to run strong and with the support we have been getting so far, no wonder.

Take the Point Edward Casino for example, Stuart Walker, the Regional Director for OLG is shown above with his team partner as they participate in the Casino's second annual Amazing Race. Nineteen teams participated this year and raised just under $4,000.

The Amazing race is just one of several events planned and organized by all departments at the Casino. This, in addition to the employee donations is a vital piece to the campaign success.

Future Shop is another non-industrial employee campaign we can be excited about. I have been told, that although their campaign wraps up the Saturday before Thanksgiving, they have already doubled last year! Their secret? One on one canvassing with a large increase in the number of donors signing up for Pay Roll Deduction. We look forward to hearing about their final results next week.

Speaking of doubling. How about Roger Sparks and all his co-workers at LCCVI. The team out there have set a goal of doubling last year's HUGE success. Roger has just begun, but if his level of enthusiasm and commitment is any indication, they will certainly build on last year's awesome campaign.

Campaign continues to roll along

The United Way campaign has now hit the $700,000 mark and continues on a high note. The photo above is the second photo sent to us from our Helicopter Tour Winners. You might have noticed their complimentary letter in The Observer last week.

By the end of this week, I think all of our Industrial Employee campaigns will have kicked off.

Suncor Employees, the first of the Industrial companies, you may have heard, exceeded 2007 and have a huge increase in the number of Donors.

Woodbridge Foam, another key supporter in our campaign since coming to Sarnia is also close to wrapping up their employee campaign and they have already surpassed our pre-campaign estimates. And the news gets better, Woodbridge Foam will match all employee pledges and special event dollars.

Visit Dave's Blog later in the week when we unveil all the details you need about our Locally Lambton Dinner on November 5, 2008.

Here is a concert you will not want to miss

Hydrosmith all started about three years ago with the annual Kickoff BBQ at Ontario Power Generation in Courtright. Most of the members of the band are OPG employees who play a variety of rock and roll favourites.

Over the years, the guys have been asked to participate in more and more fundraising concerts, and most recently, were on the big Bayfest stage during Ribfest and rocked the solid crowd with their family friendly stage show.

This year, for the first time, in partnership with Michele and Jim Stokely at the Industry, the band, with special guest Jessica Millar, and her dad Brian, also employees of Ontario Power; Brian in Courtright, and Jessica now in Toronto will play at the Industry in Sarnia in support of the United Way.

Tickets are just $10 and the band is hoping for a sell out.

This is a great opportunity for family and friends of the band, plus fans of good old fashion Rock and Roll to come out, have a great time, and support a great cause.

Helicopter Tour of Sarnia

We received a very nice note from Dorothy Kerby whose husband won the Helicopter Tour of the Sarnia area. The photo above shows what a beautiful day she and her husband had this past weekend on their tour. Dorothy was kind enough to send along this photo that shows Point Edward from above Port Huron, plus one other photo that shows the west end of the Sarnia Bay Marina property. I'll post that photo later in the week.

In the note, Dorothy mentions what a great time they had, and what an excellent host Dean Bass, the pilot was from Enbridge Pipelines. She also stressed their thanks to both Dean, and the United Way. We would like to thank Dorothy for her kind words and for sending a long her photos to us.

The United Way Board meets tonight and is the first of two Board Meetings held during the busy fall season. This meeting is usually an update to the Board of the Campaign as well as the Community Investment Process that will be kicking off soon. The Board will also hear a report from the CIC regarding three Venture Grant Applications that were received.

Campaigns surpasses the 30% mark on the thermometre

The campaign is now officially underway as the Day of Caring is now behind us.

Currently, we have $567,108 in pledges which represents 30.2% of our $1,875,000 goal. More than 2,000 people have already pledged.

In the photo above, NOVA volunteers assist during the Day of Caring at one of many senior's homes allowing them to keep safe and in their own homes.

We expect some more growth on the thermometer this time next week as the Suncor employee campaign officially wraps up. Last year, Suncor's two week intensive campaign raised about $120,000 representing the employees' donations, special events, and the corporate donation. The goal this year is an impressive and challenging $126,000; a 5% increase over last year.

Still inching closer to the first Half Million Dollars

While at NOVA Last week, I received a surprised donation from Ed Linton representing the Boilermakers local 128 as well as the secretaries and planners at Kel-gor. Ed presented my with a donation of $267.00 plus Ed told me that the President of Kel-gor will add another $200 to the total...and yes, it isn't my best picture. ;)

With this donation, we are creeping ever so close to the first $500,000 which represents nearly 27% of the campaign goal.

Busy week this week with campaign events.

Suncor employees kickoff their campaign today, and the Day of Caring on Tuesday officially kicks off the Sarnia-Lambton overall campaign.

On Wednesday, Ontario Power Generation kicks off, and on Thursday, Lanxess and St. Clair Ethanol hold kickoff BBQs, and NOVA St. Clair will begin their employee canvassing.

And On Friday, Warden Jim Burns has planned a bus trip to the Rogers Centre to see the Boston Red Sox come to town to play the streaking Blue Jays. Tickets are still available.

NOVA St. Clair RIver Site holds Turnaround BBQ one week before their kickoff

In the photo above, Trevor Williams - Leader, PE Manufacturing for SCRS and Moore Sites and his team of cooks keep pace at the Turnaround BBQ that also raised funds for the United Way. At the BBQ, which took place one week before their scheduled Kickoff BBQ next week, there was a donation jar, and other fundraiser activities for the United Way.

Today is a quiet day on the campaign trail but activity levels pick up next week highlighted by the Day of Caring on Tuesday.

A reminder that you can keep track of United Way campaign progress, not only by visiting the United Way website, but by subscribing to The Observer, and listening to local radio.

Observer subscribers have noticed that my weekly column can be found in the Life section of Saturdays, complete with a United Way Photo of the Week.

Beginning next week, our 30 second commercials start up on Tuesday and a 60 second United Way update will also air on The Fox FM on Tuesdays. You can also hear me live with Jim Weir on Country CHOK at 7:40 AM each Monday.

Imperial Oil Employee campaign kicks off

Thanks to our friend Duncan Bristow, I have a photo of Paul Cooper, a long time active Imperial Oil Employee taking time out to enjoy a sausage (or two) at the annual Imperial Oil BBQ yesterday. The event went very well and thanks to all the employee volunteers who helped make the BBQ such a success. Duncan has also contributed another photo of the BBQ that will accompany my column in The Observer on Saturday so be sure to check that one out!

Overall, the campaign continues to do well. Currently, we have $468,000 in pledges so far and the retirees are continuing to lead the way in terms of reaching their divisional target.

NOVA has one of their campaign kick offs today at the St. Clair site so I'll have a photo of that event tomorrow right here on my blog. NOVA St. Clair is in the middle of a turnaround so the BBQ is likely to be a success as well.

By the way, for others planning a United Way BBQ, you might be interested in reading this; Oktoberfest sausages out sold hot dogs at Imperial Oil on a better than 2:1 margin.
