Pizza Pizza Weekend

In the photo above, you can tell the Be Nice, Buy a Slice event at Pizza Pizza on Finch Drive in Sarnia was a hit. As you can see, my son and daughter were glad to tag along with me on Saturday to see how things were going. Although it will not be known how much money was raised from the three day event, staff at Pizza Pizza report a busier than usual Friday night.

Enjoying a couple slices of pizza was a great way to enjoy the weekend after a busy campaign week. Early indications are positive regarding the campaign. While it is still way too early for any predictions, we are still running a little ahead of last year at this time, and there seems to be a very positive mood among all the campaign volunteers.

Fun week on the Campaign Trail

We had a variety of events this week on the United Way campaign trail. Shown above is a pie throwing event at the Point Edward Casino. Casino employees each purchased pies and earned the right to throw them at their managers with all proceeds being donated to the United Way. For more photos from the Pie Throwing, visit the www.URSarnia.com website.

NOVA Moore had an Oktoberfest and the Canadian Coast Guard hosted their first ever Community BBQ and Trunk Sale.

Overall, we raised another few thousand since my last post, but in another week or two, we should see some spikes on the United Way Thermometer. Canada Coast Guard will wrap up their campaign on Thursday next week, and Sunoco employees will wrap up their campaign on Friday.

Until then, grab a slice of pizza over at Pizza Pizza at Finch and Wellington tonight from 4:00 PM until Sunday night at Midnight. Pizza Pizza will donate $1 for every slice sold.

Currently, the campaign stands at $440,000.

Getting closer to 25%

The United Way campaign continues to inch closer to the 25% mark of the campaign. Shown above is one of many events at Sunoco. The Employees run an intensive two week campaign with a variety of special events. The BBQ was held on Wednesday, Sept. 26. After just two days of campaigning, the Employees raised over $17,000, well on their way of to meet their goals.

Today, I'll be at NOVA Moore to enjoy their Oktoberfest Lunch, and tomorrow, several of us will be at the Community BBQ and Trunk Sale sponsored by Sun Life Financial, but put on by the employees of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard. This event will be held at the Northgate Shopping Centre.

You'll want to log in tomorrow to my blog to see a photo I plan to upload from the Point Edward Casino. Employees paid $2 per pie to throw at a manager. Thanks to Lori Flaxy, we have some great photos to upload.

Over $400,000 riased so far

With the help of a variety of events like the Ontario Power Generation "Charity Trust Rocks", (photo above) featuring "Hydrosmith", the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton campaign now stands at $428,000, or 23.2% of the campaign goal. This is the second year in a row employees and contractors from OPG in Courtright have gotten their campaign off to a rock'n good start. OPG kick offs have quickly developed a reputation as one of the campaign kickoffs not to be missed. This year, Hydrosmith, made up of OPG employees played for over an hour as employees ate and participated in the various activities at the event.

It has been a busy week, and this week is just a busy. Many more employee campaigns are beginning including Sunoco today, and two Enbridge sites tomorrow.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans will be holding a 3 on 3 ball hockey tournament today, and on Friday will host a community BBQ and Trunk Sale. The event will take place on Friday, September 28 beginning at 11:00 AM, and will run until 2:00 PM. The trunk sale will continue until 4:00 PM.

Pizza lovers will love the Pizza Pizza "Be nice, Buy a Slice" event. Beginning Friday at 4:00 PM and running until Sunday at midnight, Pizza Pizza on the corner of Finch and Wellington will donate $1 to the United Way for every slice of pizza sold.

Campaign just surpassed 22% of the campaign

We have just passed the 22% mark of the campaign. Nearly $417,000 has been pledged as of five minutes ago. Some of the recent growth is as a result of the many kickoff BBQs we have had recently. In the photo above, I chat with Will Rogers, and Gerry MacAlpine about the campaign at Imperial Oil, and overall campaign success to date.

I ran into Will and several other Imperial Oil employees and annuitants at the Esso Day at Sharpes Esso and Tiger Express on the corner of London Road, and Murphy. Sharpes donated 1 cent from every litre sold, plus $1 for each car wash. A special thank you to all volunteers who came out to help, as well as the Sharpes family for their support.

Many more events are talking place this week and I'll have photos of them, plus of our Day of Caring for tomorrow.

Campaign has surpassed the $400,000 level

Thanks to our employee campaign kickoffs yesterday, our campaign total has now reached $405,000. The photo above was taken at NOVA Sarnia site at their kickoff BBQ yesterday. Employee campaign participation at this NOVA site has been over 80% for the past several years. The volunteers at NOVA Sarnia - all NOVA sites really, are all seasoned pros who have the campaign well in hand. NOVA is the largest company in Lambton that matches all employees and retirees dollar for dollar. All NOVA sites run a variety of special events during the year.

Great news from Clarica/Sunlife who will be sponsoring our Department of Fisheries and Oceans community BBQ at Northgate on Friday, September 28. There will be much more information on this first time initiative. Thank you to Sunlife, and the employees at DFO, (formerly known as the Canadian Coast Guard), for this exciting event.

One last bit of insider news. Rumour has it that Skylight Films who brought us the world premier of BLINDeye last year, is set to announce this fall, the Premier of their new film "The Mystical Adventures of Billy Owens". I am told that this movie, Mark McNabb's latest work, is his best yet with amazing special effects. This is a family feature. Watch for more information about this too.

The campagin is unofficially underway
Everybody knows the Day of Caring is our official campaign kickoff. However, unofficially, we are in full campaign mode now.

Today, NOVA Chemicals in Corunna had their Grab and Go Breakfast that kicked off their campaign, and at noon today, NOVA Sarnia will kickoff their employee campaign with a BBQ, and so too will Imperial Oil employees.

The Loaned Representatives are completing their final training days, and will soon begin making their calls on our ECCs, (Employee Campaign Chairs).

I was pleased to be able to spend some time with an old friend of mine from Michigan yesterday. Rick Garcia is now the Executive Director of the United Way of St. Clair County in Michigan. Our offices are about 1 kilometre away from each other which we both agree may provide some very interesting partnering opportunities. We started to discuss a few ideas for 2008 that will greatly benefit both of our communities. Rick and I first met about 12 years ago when he worked for the Michigan Association of United Ways. I am hoping Rick might be a guest at our Day of Caring opening Breakfast on Tuesday.

The Loaned Rep.s have just started; busy week ahead
It was great to meet the 2007 Loaned Representatives this morning. Bruce Colborne from Imperial Oil, and Gary Atkinson from Shell commenced their first week today with the first of 4 training sessions. I am very impressed with the commitment from both of these gentlemen and look forward to working with them both. This was my first opportunity to meet Bruce, and Gary reminded me that he and I played in the same two pitch league on Sunday afternoons in Wyoming quite a few years ago. Gary is also a long time member of the Masons, and knows my Fatherinlaw, Dick Parkinson in Ailsa Craig who has also been a Mason for years.

On Wednesday, the Imperial Oil Campaign kicks into full gear with their annual BBQ. The canvassing has already been going on at Imperial Oil; our biggest campaign in the area.

NOVA Chemicals in Corunna will also kickoff with their annual Grab and Go Breakfast. NOVA is our largest employee campaign whose company matches all employee and retiree donation dollar for dollar. Some NOVA sites have already had special events this summer and fall and are off to a great start.

So far the campaign sits exactly where we were this time last year; just under the $400,000 mark of the campaign.

Check back often to my blog for near daily updates beginning now.

NOVA's Biggest Loser event raises over $730.00

Just as BBQ season has started, so too has an event organized by those creative minds over at NOVA. The Biggest Loser is an event based on the popular television reality show. Twenty Four participants have signed up to be the biggest loser of weight over the next couple of months.

Shown in the photo, Robyn Brocklehurst "weighs in" as Marianne Lepage looks on ready to record Robyn's current weight.

The Loaned Representatives will start at the United Way next week. Bruce Colborne from Imperial Oil and Gary Atkinson from Shell Canada will receive the training beginning on Monday. They both should be contacting and offering assistance to their accounts by the end of the week.

Imperial Oil employees will kickoff their campaign on Wednesday, September 12 with their plant wide BBQ.

Campaign BBQ season has already begun at the United Way
BBQ Season has already begun for this year's campaign. Pictured is our event up north at the Pinery Provincial Park. We have also had BBQs involving the St. Clair Ethanol Plant, Imperial Oil, NOVA chemicals, and others. In addition, the Lambton Cattlemen kicked off the BBQ circuit for United Way back in the spring as previously mentioned. The season really gets underway the week of September 10, 2007. IOL has a large plant wide BBQ planned, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, (formerly known as the Canadian Coast Guard), have a huge community BBQ planned for Friday, September 28, 2007 at the offices at the Northgate Plaza.
