United Way of Sarnia-Lambton has been selected as the recipient of the Warm Up Jersey Auction Going On Now

The Sarnia Sting in co-operation with Selectpath Financial Services are conducting an on-line jersey auction in an effort to raise funds for the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton.

The jerseys up for auction are the warm up jerseys that have been worn by the Sting during the second half of the season.

Selectpath Financial Services, the sponsor of the jerseys, has chosen the United Way as the charitable organization to receive the proceeds from the auction.

The jersey auction is taking place on the Sting website (www.sarniasting.com) and is running until Tuesday March 31st.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sarnia Sting Hockey club, and Slectpath Financial Services very much for selecting the United Way.

I would also like to wish the Sarnia Sting all the best during the 2009 OHL Playoffs.

Its back for 2009; our Great Lakes Cruise Draw

Thanks to the great success we had last year, we are once again holding a Great Lakes Cruise Raffle. The grand Prize is a trip for two aboard the Saginaw, the second place draw is a helicopter tour of Lambton County for four, and this year, a two night stay at the Four Points Hotel in Kingston. All prizes have been donated resulting in nearly a 100% profit from the raffle. Last year, over $5,000 was raised.

Thank you to Central Machine and Marine, Lower Lakes Towing, Enbridge Pipelines, and our good friends from the Four Points in Kingston.

Call or email the United Way office for tickets or if you require more information.

Exciting new Fundraiser for the United Way; showing of the play Night Sky at Imperial Oil Theatre

After a busy January and February, I am back to more regular blog updates. As with most "campaign off seasons", my updates will not be as frequent as during the campaign months, but will be at least weekly.

I will be adjusting my blog slightly to allow user comments, so I am excited about that change expected soon.

I do want to let all of you know about the joint fundraiser we are doing with the folks from the play, Night Sky. The cast and crew are moving on in a competition and need to raise some money for expenses, so they thought what better way to raise some money than by putting on the play at a special reduced rate, AND, the group is offering to donate $2 from each ticket sold to the United Way.

This is a great opportunity to see a quality play at a great price and support two groups at the same time.

The poster above has all the details, and feel free to call the Imperial Oil Theatre for more information.

The United Way wishes all those involved in Night Sky the best of luck in the competition.

Less than $90,000 to go

We are closing in on 96% with about $85,000 to go. The final campaigns are wrapping up quickly and every phone call gets us a little bit closer to our goal.

Special thanks to Teppermans for sponsoring our Construction Industry Draw. In the Photo above, store Manager Kathy Sitter and one of her employees go through the final paperwork in advance of drawing the name of the winner, a CBM Employee. Thank you to Teppermans, CBM employees, and everybody in the Construction Industry for participating in 2008. Overall, the construction industry in Sarnia-Lambton raised over $45,000 this year.

We are now at 95%
The campaign is still running along and contributions are still being made. Right now, we are at 95% and have a little over $100,000 to go.

Suncor Energy bumped up their contribution today with more than $2,000 more and Enbridge Pipelines reported their financial totals and it tallied more than we expected. All together, with the Enbridge Corporate donation, and the employees, the total is near $28,000.

Retirees, Dentists, and businesses continue to send their contributions through the mail.

Thank you to the more than 7,300 people who have pledged so far.

So close to 80%

We are now within one percentage point of the magical 80% of the 2008 Campaign goal. We could reach that milestone at any time.

We still have many campaigns running and we still have a good chance of reaching the goal of $1,875,000 before Christmas.

The schools for example are coming in fast and furious and they alone could get us over the 80% mark.

We had a great night on Saturday with the premiere of Billy Owens and the Secret of the Runes. In addition to getting some of the proceeds at the showing that was held at the Victoria Playhouse in Petrolia, the actors of the film each volunteered to sign autographs following the showing for donations to the United Way. The actors did the same during the showing of the first Billy Owens movie in 2007. All combined about $1,000 was raised for the campaign. A special thank you to Mark McNabb and Kelly Irwin of Skylight Films, and of course the actors and their families for agreeing to do this for us. I was pleased to be given the opportunity on Saturday to be the first to congratulate Mark and Kelly, the stars of the film, and the very hardworking and dedicated crew at Skylight Films for an excellent production - including the folks at Basement 143 (who shot the above photo). Two trailers where also shown on Saturday of two films currently in production which also look excellent. We look forward to being a part of those premieres too in 2009.

One more surprise from the evening was that new up and coming artist Kristin Ray of Array of Art Studios in Sarnia, was on hand selling some of her one of a kind art and will give a portion of all her sales that night to the United Way. For more information about Array of Art, click here and you will be linked directly to her website. I encourage anybody looking for a unique Christmas gift to visit her site. I will post a photo shortly of Kristin presenting me with her contribution from the premiere.

Campaign is approaching 80% of the goal

As the campaign nears 80% and Christmas is also fast approaching, Bryenton's Furniture and Interiors has a unique Christmas gift idea that will support the United Way Campaign at the same time. In the photo above, Lisa Everaert, a Design Consultant with Bryenton's models a chair, made in Norway that is a must for any home with a home theater system. Currently, the chair is on sale for $200 off, and $50 from each chair sold will be donated to the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton.

Shell Canada Employees really came through for us this year, as it seems most of the Industry in Sarnia-Lambton has. Shell raised far more money than last year and overall, we are still very hopeful that the campaign goal of $1,875,000 will be reached. We still have a long way to go, but I think we can do it.

Follow up mail to past donors who have not yet contributed this year has just gone out and we expect that most if not all of the donors will come through for us again this year.

The campaign has slowed down again, but we are still ahead of last year

We are still hearing positive comments about the Locally Lambton Dinner last week. Norm Piquette and his staff, (shown above) deserve much of the credit for cooking up the one of a kind meal. Norm will be the first to concede that he had some great products to work with from the local producers and farmers. Thanks again to all.

As I mentioned in the headline, the campaign has slowed again but we continue to run about $100,000 ahead of last year at this point in time....and, remember, last year ended up being a record campaign. So, indicators do remain positive, but there is still such a long way to go. Right now, we are at about 58% of the way towards the $1.875 million goal. Our strategy remains the same, to encourage everybody who donated last year to do so again this year, and if we are successful at doing that, then we should reach 100 per cent of the campaign by the end of the year.

Locally Lambton Dinner - a HUGE success

The Locally Lambton Dinner held on November 5, 2008 was a huge success. The food on the buffet was excellent and really showed off the cooking talents of Norm Piquette and his staff at Norm Piquette Catering.

In the photo above, is Bill Duffield from the Lambton Sheep Producers who donated two grade A lambs for the buffet. Bill is at the 12 foot venetian creme cake that Norm baked especially for the dinner. I will publish a photo shortly of Norm replenishing the beef sirloin tip on the 32 foot buffet table.

Special thanks to everybody who contributed to the Locally Lambton Dinner; an event we hope will be an annual fundraiser and opportunity to show off the world class food grown and raised right here in Lambton County. The United Way raised over $14,000 from the event.
